What Makes Toothpaste Toxic? Ingredients to Watch Out For
Toothpaste is something we use daily, often without a second thought. But not all toothpastes are created equal. Many conventional brands contain ingredients that, over time, may negatively impact your health, especially when used by children or those with sensitivities.
Here’s a closer look at some of the most common toxic ingredients hiding in your toothpaste and why they matter.
🚫 Ingredients to Avoid
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
A foaming agent that can cause mouth irritation, canker sores, and dry out your oral tissues.Triclosan
An antibacterial agent linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance. It’s banned in soaps, yet still found in some toothpastes.Artificial Sweeteners (e.g., Saccharin, Aspartame)
These offer no health benefit and may contribute to behavioral or metabolic issues in sensitive individuals.Fluoride (in excess)
Though widely used, fluoride can be toxic when swallowed in large amounts, especially for young children. It can also contribute to dental and skeletal fluorosis.Propylene Glycol
Used to create a smooth texture but also found in antifreeze. It may cause skin, eye, or lung irritation.Artificial Dyes (FD&C Colors)
Added for appearance, these synthetic dyes have been linked to hyperactivity in children and potential carcinogenic effects.
Why It Matters
The tissues in your mouth absorb substances directly into your bloodstream, no filters. That means what goes in your mouth doesn’t just affect your teeth; it can impact your entire body. Children are especially vulnerable!
Choose Better
Look for toothpastes that are free of SLS, triclosan, artificial dyes, and fluoride (unless otherwise recommended by your provider). Better yet, choose formulations with hydroxyapatite, herbal extracts, and essential oils to support oral health naturally.
